Very good post! I've been pondering these things lately too. I'm definitely pro-choice in this sense (and I try to do so as non-judgementally as possible). Abortion gets fuzzier for me, certainly once the baby is viable outside the womb. But then, being pro-VBAC throws another wrench in the works, to what ends is it ok for a mom to say no to a c-section? (The correct answer being she can ALWAYS refuse, but when the babies life is truly endangered I start to get fuzzy...) Same with unassisted birth. Things just aren't as black and white as they appear and I have basically called it quits right there. Lol.

Thank you Clare! I think I got the Trofast idea from MN actually. It's really revolutionised our house and cut down on the mess, although I must admit piccies were taken on a 'good' day :D

How do you know his cases are for Gyny not OB? The average number of lifetime malpractice suits for OB/gyns is 2.5. Yet this guy has 6-7 in less than a decade. That's astoundingly bad, no matter what they are for.

If it is true he has no OB suits it could be due to Calf. malpractice restrictions. California tends to reject damages that are not extremely obviously related -- like medical expenses. OBs and midwives who just stand around and let nature take its course tend to kill babies, not maim them for life. They may not recognize the damage of the death of a person who didn't have a job (real nice, isn't it?) His brand of OB malpractice might not be actionable under CA's laws.

What is his death rates related to labor (both stillbirths in labor and deaths shortly after)?

Although the lawsuits stated in the paper are for GYN and not OB, they are nonetheless against the SAME physician. It's disturbing how bad medical decisions can be excused by the public because they did not occur in OB or because he's a "nice guy"...it is still the "woman's" body and HER reproductive and urological organs that are being manipulated. If all it took was celebrity and public popularity and just being a "wonderful" person to maintain practice at any given facility, I would think twice about the facility. Fortunately there are rules, guidelines and bylaws that must be followed in order to practice at Scripps otherwise there are consequences...and here we are.

Thanks Jenna! What a lovely, respectful thing for him to say. It's a shame that it's not the norm.

I was uncertain about doulas until one 'showed up' for my home birth. She was incredible and I have so much respect for women who dedicate themselves to this profession. It's not an easy one.

Katharyne... I can't thank you enough for this post. As a mother of two young girls and someone who has the burden for birth, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm in the process of being certified with DONA... and someday think I'll take the midwife path... but SO WISH that i could take the medical school path, but agree with you 100% in that it seems next to impossible.

Also, to give you one more reason to respect Dr. Biter- when he and I were discussing a birth that I attended and I was processing through how things had gone very different from what was seeming to be the course (mom at 9 cm, stuck, got to 10, pushed 3 hours and ended in a c-section)- referred to me, as a doula, "his colleague." I already respected the man immensely, having birthed with him myself... but my respect and appreciation grew ten-fold with that comment.

Thanks for your postings as of late...

as stated above... the malpractice suits cited in the tribune are for gyn related cases and not for ob cases... yet it's his ob privileges which have been suspended. this does not add up.
mrssea07 and eyeswideopen... you do not have to agree with me... but please, don't insult me or any of the other educated women who are backing dr. biter by suggesting that we've "drunk the kool-aid" and insinuating that that we are cult followers. i am basing my opinion on the facts that i know of dr. biter and the other dr's deciding his fate and from conversations I've had with him face to face.

also- as this conversations goes further, do us a favor and use your real names, as we have, instead of seeming to hide behind screen names as you make your acquisitions and judgments.
